Repeat registration checklist for migration agents
Renewal is an annual event, so it is easy to treat as routine until something is missing on the day. This is the list to work through in the 60 days before your registration expires, in the order the OMARA portal will ask for it.
Timeline
60 days before expiry: the portal opens your repeat registration application and the OMARA starts reminder emails. Before expiry: lodge and pay, and your registration continues automatically while the application is assessed. After expiry: you are unregistered until a late application is approved.
1. CPD: 10 points, correctly composed
10 points completed in the 12 months immediately before the day you lodge. The window →
At least 5 points Category A (live, interactive). What counts →
1 point on ethical standards and 1 point on the RMA Code of Conduct, from activities approved for those topics.
No more than 6 online points counted in any 24-hour period. The cap →
Every activity from an OMARA-approved provider, with an activity number. How to check →
Run the calculator before you rely on your own count. Lawyers with a current practising certificate: the CPD requirement does not apply, but you will need to evidence the certificate. Details →
2. CPD evidence, one certificate per activity
Check on each certificate
Why
Your name and MARN
Must match your registration record.
Provider name and provider number
Must be on the OMARA approved list for the date of the activity.
Activity number, title and category (A or B)
Lets the OMARA match it to an approved activity and to your Category A count.
Points and completion date
Places it inside the 12-month window and against the 24-hour cap.
Mandatory topic noted
Shows the ethics and Code of Conduct requirements are covered.
Widen certificates carry all of these and completions are also reported to the OMARA, but the certificates are still your record. Download them from My CPD before you start the application. Record-keeping guide →
3. Professional indemnity insurance
A current policy meeting the prescribed requirements, with the certificate of currency to hand.
If your renewal date and your insurance renewal date are close, renew the insurance first so the certificate covers the registration period.
4. Fit and proper declarations
Answer the integrity questions accurately: criminal matters, bankruptcy or insolvency, professional disciplinary matters, and changes since your last application.
Disclose rather than hope. An undisclosed matter is a Code of Conduct problem in its own right.
5. Practice details and fees
The statement of services you provided and the average fees charged in the previous registration period, if the application asks for it.
Business name, ABN, addresses, email and phone up to date. The OMARA's register entry for you is built from these.
Supervising details if you are a restricted-certificate lawyer.
6. Payment
The repeat registration charge at the rate current on the portal. Pay with the application: an unpaid application is not lodged, and the automatic continuation of your registration depends on lodging and paying before expiry.
7. After lodging
Keep practising; your registration continues while the application is assessed, provided it was lodged and paid before expiry.
Respond promptly to any request for further information. CPD evidence is the most common one.
Note next year's expiry date and start the CPD plan for it now: the two mandatory topics first, then Category A, then modules.
Tick off the CPD line in one go
A 10-point Points Pass for A$220 covers a full year of OMARA-approved CPD, live and self-paced, mandatory topics included. Every completion issues a certificate with the activity number and is reported to the OMARA.
Any time in the 60 days before your registration expires, once your CPD is complete. Lodging and paying before expiry keeps you registered while the application is assessed.
What CPD evidence does the OMARA want for repeat registration?
A certificate for each activity showing your name and MARN, the provider and provider number, the activity number and category, the points and the completion date, with the mandatory topics identifiable.
Do I need professional indemnity insurance to renew?
Yes. A current policy that meets the prescribed requirements is a condition of repeat registration, and the certificate of currency is part of the application.
What if I lodge before expiry but the OMARA has not decided by the expiry date?
Your registration continues automatically while a repeat application lodged and paid before expiry is assessed.
