CPD Guide
What changed for migration agent CPD on 1 April 2026
The Migration Agents (CPD Activities, Approval of CPD Providers and CPD Provider Standards) Instrument 2026 (LIN 26/001) reset the CPD framework. Here's what's different — and the transitional rules that matter this year.
The key changes
- Mandatory ethics point. At least 1 point must cover ethical standards for registered migration agents.
- Mandatory Code of Conduct point. At least 1 point must cover the Code of Conduct. (Both mandatory points can be Category A or B.)
- Online cap cut to 6 points / 24 hours. An online activity is worth a maximum of 6 points in any continuous 24-hour period — down from 10. You can no longer clear a whole year of CPD in one online sitting.
- 12-month private study deadline. A private-study (Category B) activity with assessment must be completed within 12 months of enrolment.
- Tighter 'interactive' definition. An interactive workshop must involve real-time discussion among participants and/or interactive participation tools.
- New optional activity on the protection of workplace rights.
Unchanged
You still need 10 CPD points per registration period, with a minimum of 5 Category A, completed in the 12 months before you submit your repeat-registration application.
Transitional rules for 2026–27
If you apply for repeat registration between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027, CPD activities you commenced or completed on or before 30 June 2026 are assessed under the old rules. In practice that means, for those pre-30-June activities:
- more than 6 online points in a 24-hour period can still count;
- the 12-month private-study completion deadline does not apply;
- the ethics/conduct mandatory requirement can be met with 1 point from a pre-30-June activity.
Activities from 1 July 2026 onwards follow the new rules in full.
