How much does CPD cost for migration agents?

A full 10-point CPD year can cost anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to well over a thousand, depending on the provider and how you buy. Here is what the points actually cost, what drives the price, and what to check before you pay for anything.

What a whole CPD year costs

The pass is cheaper because it is paid up front. The practical advantage is different: once you hold a pass you book live sessions from your My CPD dashboard without a payment step, which is what gets the Category A points booked early instead of in the last fortnight.

What drives the price of CPD

• Category A is the expensive half. At least 5 of your 10 points must be interactive, and a Category A workshop is capped at 30 participants under LIN 26/001. Presenter time is spread across fewer people than a recorded webinar, so live points usually cost more than private study elsewhere. Widen prices them the same.
• Mandatory topics are sometimes sold at a premium. The ethics point and the Code of Conduct point are required every year, and some providers price them accordingly. Check whether they are included in any bundle you are quoted.
• Conferences bundle other things. A two-day conference may deliver 10 points, but you are also paying for the venue, catering and travel. If you only need the points, it is rarely the cheapest route.
• Membership bundles. Professional associations often include some CPD in a membership fee. Divide the fee by the points you will actually use before you count it as free.

Five things to compare before you pay

1. Is the provider OMARA-approved, and is the activity approved? Points from an unapproved provider do not count, whatever they cost. How to check →
2. Is the price per point or per activity? A 2-point workshop at "A$95" is A$47.50 a point.
3. Is GST included? Prices quoted ex-GST are 10% more at checkout.
4. How many of the points are Category A? A cheap 10-point online bundle that is all private study cannot satisfy your 5-point Category A minimum, so you will still have to buy live points on top.

Is CPD tax deductible?

For a practising registered migration agent, CPD is generally a work-related self-education expense because it maintains the skills you use in your current work. Keep the tax invoice and the certificate. Whether and how you claim depends on your own circumstances, so confirm with your accountant.

How much does one CPD point cost?

With Widen CPD, A$30 incl. GST for a single live session or self-paced module, or A$22 a point on the 10-point Points Pass (A$220). Other providers commonly charge between about A$40 and A$100 a point, with live and conference points at the higher end.

Is there free CPD for migration agents?

Occasionally. Some providers offer a free first point to new practitioners, and community legal centre staff can sometimes attend seminars free. Widen ran two free Category B modules until 7 October 2026; they are now A$30 each. Whatever is on offer, check that the activity is from an OMARA-approved provider before you spend time on it.

Can I pay per activity instead of buying a pass?
